Mar. 31, 2008 Roskilde Music Festival

Roskilde Festival held south of Roskilde in Denmark is the largest North European music festival and has existed since 1971. It is a non-profit organisation consisting of about 25 full-time employees and thousands of volunteers. Each year, The Roskilde Festival Charity Society, which is the association behind Roskilde Festival, ensures that the profits from the festival are donated directly to humanitarian and cultural purposes.

During the festival itself the number of volunteers increases to about 25,000 in 2007. These volunteers staff the festival stalls, build stages, provide camping security etc. Most volunteers are from cultural organisations and sports associations in the area. These clubs and societies run most of the stalls at the Festival Site, and with their great variety in goods and atmosphere the stalls contribute to the unique, intimate and exciting ambience at Roskilde Festival.

Until the mid-1990s the festival attracted mostly Scandinavians, but in recent years it has become more and more international (with an especially large influx of Germans, Australians and Brits).

A monument will be built at Roskilde ’08 – and the Festival needs the audience’s help to decide what it should look like.

What is a monument at Roskilde Festival? Is it tall or low? Wide or narrow? Can you sit on it or does it provide shelter from the elements?

During this spring Roskilde Festival’s architect will interpret the audience’s input and make a complete design sketch of a building project for the audience. You can express your requests in three steps on their website.

First step is a vote on the fundamental relations between audience and monument. The relations are illustrated with a set of small signs that you can choose between. The most popular signs will form the basis of the architect’s work. The result will then be subject to another vote.

You can vote until 4 April.

M.I.A. hits Roskilde Festival

The British warrior girl is added to the programme along with Burhan G, Majors, Radiohead, The Chemical Brothers, Slayer, Neil Young, Judas Priest and My Bloody Valentine.

M.I.A. (UK) mixes British grime hip hop with dancehall, Bollywood, Afro hip hop and The Pixies. Her music is dirty like a city pavement, and it has both Western and Oriental blood running through its system. The warrior girl has moved right up alongside male counterparts such as Wiley and Dizzee Rascal – and her latest album, Kala, has strengthened her position at the front line of global pop music.
